Turid Owren Speaks on Panel at Annual Immigration Conference

Turid Owren, who leads Tonkon Torp’s Business Immigration Practice Group, was a panel participant at the annual conference of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) in Boston last month. Three speakers addressed the topic of “Top Mistakes in Employment-Based Practice.”

“After 10 years of serving on AILA’s national liaison committees, I wanted to share with practitioners tips and best practices I’ve learned and mistakes I’ve seen attorneys make, and to let them know they are not alone in making mistakes because we ALL make them occasionally,” said Owren. “The important thing is to recognize the mistake and strategize on solutions.”

Based on feedback from conference participants, the panel was well appreciated. Some audience members approached the panel afterward to share stories of their own mistakes and to ask for advice.

Owren has for many years served as liaison between AILA and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), chairing or participating on various committees that address USCIS activities and adjudication. She is the recipient of an AILA presidential commendation for outstanding leadership in liaison.

Tonkon Torp’s Business Immigration Practice Group advises domestic and international companies and individuals on employment-related immigration issues. The group was established by Owren in 1999 and works with some of the region’s largest manufacturing, healthcare and technology organizations to help them successfully hire and retain foreign workers for U.S. assignments.
