Diversity

Tonkon Torp has built a diverse organization by both evolution and design. Our culture and our policies encourage individuals of diverse backgrounds to join and remain with the firm.

The firm has appointed a Diversity Partner who works with our Diversity Task Force to identify barriers to recruiting and retaining minority lawyers and staff; to recommend specific programs or changes to existing practices; and to evaluate the firm's progress in achieving a workforce that is reflective of our clients and our community.

Women at Tonkon Torp

Thirty precent of our lawyers are women, including 21% of our partners and 52% of our associates. Women are active in the leadership of the firm.  We have women chairing key practice groups and committees, and a woman member of the firm's Managing Board.

Tonkon Torp offers:
  • A generous parental leave policy that applies to both men and women.
  • Formal part-time lawyer policies for both partners and associates.

Sexual orientation

We currently have openly gay lawyers and staff. In addition, several of our lawyers belong to organizations or are actively involved in activities that protect and promote the rights of gays and lesbians.

Minority recruiting

To increase both the pool of minority applicants and the number of minority hires, we have undertaken the following initiatives:
  • We have participated in the Oregon State Bar First-Year Minority Program.
  • We have established a First Year Diversity Fellowship to recruit minority students to the firm.
  • We regularly support the scholarship fundraising efforts of the Oregon Minority Lawyers Association.
  • We have participated in local and regional minority recruiting fairs.
  • We have been or are actively involved in organizations such as the Urban League, the Hispanic-Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, the Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs (OAME) and Self-Enhancement, Inc.
  • We donate substantial pro bono legal services to emerging minority businesses.
  • We have participated in the Oregon State Bar's Affirmative Action program, Opportunities for Law in Oregon (OLIO), and participate in the annual BOWLIO event.

First-Year Diversity Fellowship Program

Tonkon Torp LLP is committed to the growth of diversity in our firm and in the local legal community. To that end, we are pleased to offer a student fellowship to a first-year law student who is a member of a racial or ethnic minority group.
